Feeling very tired this evening. It has been a wonderful three days on our tour of Skye, and it felt quite sad to leave the island and head back over to the mainland. However, the brilliant sunshine and highland scenery soon made up for it. First stop today was at Eilean Donan Castle, which we had time to explore inside and out. The original castle was destroyed in the early 1700s, so the current castle is a 20th century reconstruction. The interior seemed ‘homely’ when compared to other castles that we have seen this trip, however the location at a point where three sea lochs meet is outstanding. I spent most of the time sitting outside soaking it all in.
Top left is of Kyle of Lochalsh with the bridge over to Skye. The other photos are around the castle. We then headed to Fort Augustus which is located on the banks of Loch Ness. While the others on the tour took a cruise on the Loch, I spent my time exploring the town since I didn’t feel that I needed a second outing on the Loch. Fort Augustus is lovely, particularly the old Abbey and little cafĂ© perfectly located where the Loch meets the Caledonian Canal. I was even lucky enough to see the canal locks in action as a tall ship moved through them. Amazing engineering at work.
As we continued to Edinburgh, we had a brief stop at the Dalwhinnie Distillery, which is apparently the highest distillery in Scotland. I didn’t try any whisky, but others on the tour who did say it was excellent.
Top left is Loch Ness, with the top right photo showing the lock in action. The tour ended in Edinburgh, so I was given a train ticket to carry on to Glasgow (only an hour away by train). So excited that mum will join me in Glasgow tomorrow.
