Awoke this morning to rain, which has continued on and off all day however hasn’t stopped me from exploring Glasgow. This morning I walked up to the Glasgow Necropolis for a look around. The Necropolis is a Victorian cemetery located on a hill beside the Glasgow Cathedral and seems to be full of ornate gravestones and mausoleums (some larger than many homes would have been at the time). Apparently, there are over 50,000 people buried there, but with only approximately 3,500 monuments still existing. I found it really interesting to wander around – many people seem to have been merchants, and there is a very large monument to John Knox at the top of the hill.
Highlight of the day was mum’s arrival in the early
afternoon. She was remarkably refreshed, especially considering that she had
just travelled for nearly 24 hours. We headed straight out for a walk around
Glasgow, starting with the Central Train Station, then walking up Buchanan
Street and over to the Glasgow Cathedral. I found the Cathedral just as awe
inspiring as when I first saw it a few weeks ago, but today the organist was practicing,
and the music added another level to the experience. It is such a magnificent
building.
Tomorrow we are planning to further explore Glasgow, using the Hop On Hop Off bus to get us around.
